Though my big sister would shun me for saying this, I don't get too excited about fireworks. But July 4th is always good for one thing -- a day off work. This year, this meant my dad could come to Midland for the long weekend! We LOVE when he makes these quick visits on the way to or from business trips.
I built this sandbox just before he came, and it was really fun watching him make roads and cities with my boys the same way he'd play with me when I was little.
On the Fourth, we went to our neighbor's house for s'mores, water balloons, and fireworks with two sets of Smiths. It was perfection. And because my dad brought his camera, there were lots of pictures -- even some of me!
The kids chased each other, Trenton, and me with water balloons. Then Trent chased Matt with a bucket of water, and Matt chased him back. It was very entertaining. Serves Matt right for trying to stay neat and dry with the other ladies.
It was an absolutely gorgeous night. That sunset was worth the long wait until dark.
We hit all the bases with poppers, firecrackers, actual fireworks, glow bracelets, and sparklers. It's still crazy to us that you're allowed to set off your own fireworks in Michigan.
Such a fun night.
The next morning, guess what I found out!!
Since my dad was at our house and I was too excited to keep this secret, he was the first person to know after Matt. He and I went for a little jog that morning and the news just came out like pregnancy vomit. We didn't tell our boys right away, but the rest of us had an extra happy day.
We did some more work on the patio that day (our never-ending project this summer). My dad did actually help a little bit, but his time was best spent critiquing from the sidelines and playing with the boys.
We had a little celebratory ice cream at Cottage Creamery that night.
Saturday, we drove to Ludington to show Grandpa Steve what Michigan beaches are like. He loved it. We did everything that should be done with children at the beach: played catch, dug holes, built sand cities, tried unsuccessfully to fly a kite, waded to the buoys, read books, and took pictures.
It was the perfect day, so of course Ludington was super crowded and we didn't even try to hit our favorite ice cream place. But it was definitely worth the drive. We love having company in town to force us to put our busy lives on hold and do things that are FUN!
