Jude's Surgery and Grandma Sara

I'll get right to it -- Jude recently had a little surgery. Over the summer, he started having some painful, recurring urinary problems. I don't want to go into detail in case he's embarrassed someday, but he ended up having a surgical procedure to fix the problem. Matt and I drove him down to the Univeristy of Michigan Children's Hospital in Ann Arbor, where he was taken care of by the most wonderful medical staff around. We are so grateful to them for making this an easy, calm experience for Jude.

I could not get over the cuteness of his little socks and hospital gown.

He was so relaxed and quiet the whole time we were in the hospital (which is very unusual for my energetic three-year-old). He just sat there and watched TV while coloring the little alligator they gave him. These people really know children!

While Jude was in surgery, Matt and I went down to the cafeteria. We were given a buzzer to give us updates and let us know when we could go back to Jude. Coolest thing ever.

Here's our little recovery patient. He was so tough and calm, even coming out of anesthesia. He did get upset when it was time to put pants on because he didn't understand why he was hurting, but fortunately he was really good about taking pain medicine when it was offered.

We took some pictures while we were waiting in the wheelchair for Matt to get the car. This is the silliest face Jude could muster while on oxycodone.

Before the surgery, he had asked if we could get donuts for lunch, and we of course said yes. He reminded us on the way out, so after an amazingly delicious stop at Zingermann's for sandwiches, Matt found us a great donut shop. And Jude fell asleep like this immediately after he got his wish.

The next few days were spent pants-less (for Jude, at least) while he recovered. There were lots of shows and video games to keep him from wrestling and hurting himself.

My mom came into town to help take care of Jude and to help paint the basement. She is a Registered Nurse, and it is always so comforting to have her here in these situations to see that things heal correctly. She was on the watch for infection!

My mom is a baby person. She loves all babies, and they all love her.

A couple days later, Jude needed to get some fresh air. We all went to Grandma's Pumpkin Patch to play and have their amazing donuts. (Yes, we really like donuts.) It was a beautiful day.

Jude was a little hesitant to play and very careful not to hurt his owie, but he was able to loosen up enough to have fun and get some energy out.

But when it came time to take a potty break and pull that underwear down and up, it was a full on war in the port-a-potty. All day, we would have these sad, frustrating, difficult battles about pulling pants up and down, and we had to put ointment on three times a day too. I'm so glad that is over. He's still protective of that area, but everything is all healed up now.

Back at home, we had the usual fun around the neighborhood while the weather was nice.

My weirdo boys -- syrup fingers from taking a waffle on our walk, and biking in church clothes and flip flops.

Our nights and baby nap times were spent down in the basement. We painted every single wall down there and put in all the baseboards and door trim. Couldn't have done it without my work horse of a mother.

Sometimes we would take breaks to run errands or shop at Kohl's, for which my mom HAD to dress up Adele and take pictures.

Great Lakes Creamery for the woman who loves chocolate like no one I've ever known.

I took my mom to my favorite kick boxing class one afternoon, and you can't really tell from these pictures, but when we came out we saw the most amazing rainbow. You could see the entire arch, both ends, and get this -- it was a DOUBLE rainbow! Can you kind of see it? Life officially changed.

Oh, how we miss this lady when she's away. Anyone who encourages me to eat junk food AND exercise as much as she does is a winner!
